Still Working On Her Nameext_4182936July 10 2017, 18:02:46 UTC
I think by writing things down on paper. So I co-opted an old three dollar craft store journal for Teachers Write. I bought it years ago; it's filled with notes about painting and gardening. I'll have to buy some of those little flags to keep track of the TW pages.
I don't really have a WIP. I have never written fiction, but have always aspired to. I read Stephen King's On Writing a few year ago with every intention of this being the year. No dice. Teachers Write seemed like a nice step. I have always wanted to share my stories. So, today's the day. What I have done over the past few years is keep a list of story ideas in my phone. I had a new one just last week. I am going to try to develop that. My writing teacher in college stressed writing about what you know, so I am going to try to weave my life into the kids in my book. My guess is it will be cathartic.
WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW
My girl lives in a small house in a pretty decent suburban neighborhood. She recently moved in. It's just her and her mom. Dad isn't in the picture. This is her fifth elementary school. She has extremely low status socially because she is constantly the "new" girl in school. She's a target for bullies. Not having long-term friendships has made social interactions difficult for her. Just as a new friendship is being formed, she has to move.
Mom is a functioning alcoholic. She works 40 hours a week plus overtime when she can "to keep the lights on". She loves her daughter, but she loves herself more. She parties. She has all the power in the home. Her drinking hurts their finances, which causes stress, which leads to more drinking.
Story starts in August just before the school year. What my main character doesn't know is that she has just moved into a neighborhood that is going to save her life. Two doors down lives a boy her exact age named Jason. He's a quadriplegic who lives with his mom, stepdad and baby sister.
