(She’s the child I never had, but would have if it could have been
The product of love found too late,
When childbearing was no longer possible)

But in my story she’s alive, and anxious and pensive
Not about the fashion trends of teens,
Not school, although she could use a little help there.
It’s not boys or relationships that worry her yet.
It’s parents - parents that are much older than most
Parents that are starting to have many health problems
That may not be around for as long as she needs them

She visits her friends’ houses and sees their parents -
So active and alive
With social lives, gym memberships, and planning futures
And then she sees her own -
Two wonderful beings, but sedate, set in their routine
With bottles of prescription drugs
This one for high blood pressure, another to control blood sugar
The little pink pill Daddy takes on the sly when he's feeling a little
discomfort in his chest.
Rarely going out, rarely making plans for their future
Rarely even staying up past 9 o’clock.

How long? How long will they be there?
Where will she turn when she needs them and they are gone?
Who will be there? Who will care?
And when will that day come when she will be...alone?
