I am grateful every day that I went to a high school where my friends were openly gay, allowed to question their sexuality safely and were not ridiculed. It's so untrue in many places, and probably in many places in my hometown, but somehow we were safe.

This gave me the ability and the knowledge to write homosexuality in the same way I write disability--it's there, but it's not the focus--and hopefully, one day, teens will be able to read my books and see themselves reflected as not-an-issue.

And maybe, one day, all of our society will believe this too.
