Yes . . . we have a pomegranate tree with tons of ripe fruit, so on my way back from collecting the eggs (32 from coop #1 and 23 from coop #2 o_O) this afternoon I picked one . . . and I ate it. B-) I've never nonchalantly personally picked pomegranates and consumed them before I came here. It's pretty awesome =D!
Today I woke up just in time to get dressed and ready for breakfast =D . . . then i remembered that i had to take care of the chickens before devotions too!!! YIKES!! D8 I ran up and did that very quickly (because all the roosters were still contained in the coops and I could just go in and steal the eggs out the back door ;D ) and on the way back from the coops Matt offered me a ride to the ed building =D. So we got there just as devotions were starting =D but we had to eat during devos anyway =(.
After breakfast was over i made some phone calls to see about some prescriptions and my new debit card from Chase. Then I ran up to help move the chicken coops again (we [should] do that twice a week). When we got there I had to turn the power to the fence off because Jarrel (sp?) had somehow gotten into the pasture with the dairy goats o_O. He is the more skiddish of our steers and we actually keep a small halter on him because he's impossible to catch without it. Of course once he went over the fence he was terrified of going back o_O. So we had to turn the hot fence off, stand on it so it was at ground level, and have someone chase the poor steer back over it *eyeroll*. After moving the coops we thought it might be a good idea to put a halter on Jarrel that actually FIT him, lol! I actually got up to him and pet his nose a little (they said that i was the first of them to be able to get that close to him =D) then when I got hold of the halter that was on him he freaked out and both Darren (who was holding the lead) and I (holding the halter on Jarrel's neck) were flung all around the pasture trying to get the thing off him. It just got ridiculous, so we let him go and left the new halter on the chicken coop so that someone could put it on him one day, lol.
Then Jocelyne and I went to visit the turkeys and get some more fencing for the northern pasture. We have only lost two turkeys so far (out of 100) and we expected to lose another last night . . . but when we got there everyone was alive and racing back and forth in the coop flapping their little wing-stubs =D! So everyone made it! It was great!
After getting some fencing we went to the dairy goat pasture and worked on the fence. We tightened the weak ends, rewound some parts, replaced some parts, and tightened the whole thing so it was more stable. It was a lot more work than I expected it to be =/. While we were working on it (kids on one side and dairy rotation goats on the other side) everyone wanted to be on the side they were not supposed to be on. The kids came over to inspect what were doing and stood on our backs while we worked, and the dairy adults (and Jugs <3) wanted to come across to our side of the fence where they were not allowed to be o_O. I found myself yelling things like, "DUTCHESS!!! Don't you cross that line, missy!! I'm watching you!!" I never thought I'd yell 'Dutchess' at the top of my lungs ever in my life, lol =P. I also told Jocelyne that I never thought I would need so much "finger strength" for this job! It's really difficult to twist that wire fence around with your fingers! D=
The rest of the morning was spent working on "The Books." Jocelyne showed me all about milk, meat, and egg sales. In fact, we were working so hard on it that we forgot to go to lunch D8!! Susan came up to us as we worked on the computer and said, "We were all wondering where you guys were! Did you eat?" We said that we didn't realize that it was lunchtime and Susan just clapped her hands and said (reminiscent of the voice we use while herding the goats =P), "C'mon girls! Let's go! C'mon! Up up!" LOL! =P
I grabbed a plate of food and ran to my orientation class where I learned all about the history of the farm and about my expectations as an intern. I can't say it was much news to me, but it was very interesting to get some of the details as to the farm income-expenses and get my expectations more clearly stated =). The class lasted until 4:30pm! It was really long! D= After it was over I realized that it was raining outside . . . RAINING? You mean . . . WEATHER????!!??!!??!!??!??!?!? \:D/ I ran outside with the egg bucket (for my evening egg-collection) and scampered up to the coops in the pouring rain! It was awesome and very refreshing (although I'm still a bit damp now =/)! =D
When I got to the coops I reached the second coop with no problems and collected tons of eggs! The first coop (the biggest one) was guarded by all three (able-bodied) roosters O.O. None of them would let me near the thing. So I went to get some of their feed and scatter it on the ground to distract them. As I opened the feed container something darted out of the grass in the neighboring (unused and overgrown) pasture!! D= It was HUGE and I didn't know what it could be! After I regained bladder control (lol ;P) I realized that it was Rodrigo the black/brown steer! o_O How did he get over there? I have no clue. Jocelyne told me earlier that day while we were working on the fence that one day they found Rodrigo in a pasture with goats that was three fences away from where he should be. He must have leaped out of his pasture, walked across the road, leaped into another pasture, and leaped again into the third pasture with the goats. So I guess he has a history of fence-hopping. o_O I called Jocelyne to see if he would be ok out there or if we needed to get him back in for the night. She said that he would be fine, but I checked to make sure that the unused gait was closed none the less . . . not like that would stop him if he wanted to get out. lol!
When I got back to the ed building to drop off the eggs Susan and Jocelyne told me about the plan for tonight. Susan is baking brownies and making mint ice cream and we are eating them at 8:00pm while watching one or two of the "30 Days" episodes (
http://www.fxnetworks.com/shows/originals/30days/ )!!!! IM EXCITED FOR ICE CREEEEEEAM!!! WHOOOT!!! \:D/
One damper in the day was that Jocelyne asked if I would be willing to take "weekend duty" this coming weekend. D'= That means I will be doing all the chores by myself (waking up at 6:00am, milking, feeding, turkey duty, watering veggies, etc.) for BOTH days AND working the vegetable sale all day on Saturday. So that means I'll be doing TONS of stuff that I've never done before (by myself) AND milking 4 times in 2 days (for a total of 6 times this week), unable to shop for supplies like I'd hoped, and probably unable to go to the soccer game too D'=. I agreed to do it . . . what am I going to say? "no, i'm afraid i can't do my job this weekend."? =(
Maybe it will be easier by myself . . . i can take as much time as I need to (except Saturday because of the veggie sale at 10:00am) and I might have some time to read and/or listen to music during the sale, or something . . . and maybe I'll have time to nap? . . . =S *worried*
But I'm still looking forward to ice cream tonight =P . . .
