These dates are all calculated using the average gestation period for goats - 150 days. For some goats it will be a few days earlier and for others it will be a few days later than they are scheduled on this calendar. For example: Careful records have been kept on breeding and kidding dates for some of our does. One of these does is Eliza whom I have records for 4 years worth of breedings. She has regularly kidded 2 days earlier than the 150 day average. So, although the date I have on the calendar for her kidding is April 12 she will probably kid closer to April 10.
For the CAE positive does I will need to remove their kids at birth (which means I need to be there for the actual birth and can't just let them kid out in the pasture as WHRI has done in the past) before they are even cleaned by their mother. I will need to clean them all up, pasturize their mom's colostrum and milk, and feed it to them very often . . . not sure how often yet =/. But I'm going to be doing tons of research in the coming weeks so I can be as prepared as possible for the babies.
I'm looking forward to having healthy babies running all around creation . . . but I'm super nervous about missing a kid and having them catch CAE or tetanus or enterotoxemia because I screwed up =( . . . I'm also not going to be thrilled with the whole lack of sleep thing because there's going to be virtually no one who can help me with any nighttime kidding that goes on. I'm gonna buy a cheap sleeping bag and camp out in the barn for those few weeks when the positives are kidding right and left. I'm anticipating some
wicked burnout . . . but hopefully some
good pay-off =D <3
. . . sorry, I just got on a
www.despair.com kick lately (kind of an inside joke . . . the website has a lot of sarcastic, pessimistic comments written in the form of inspirational posters), lol =P . . . I really am looking forward to when the hard part of kidding (and disbudding and castrating) is over and I can enjoy the itty bitty babies >:D<
Edit: I just sold Eliza and Maasai, so I don't have to worry about Eliza kidding first! Frosty (CAE - ) will be my first momma <3
Edit Edit: The woman who just sold Eliza and Maasai booked on the deal. Neither have been sold. Bad news . . . baaaaaad news . . .
