I've always felt it has to be something more than tradition/custom/culture. Otherwise, there would have been a flood of K'immies who said 'to hell with it' and did the deed. And since we have no examples of people finding out the hard way, my theory is that there must be some internal instinct about it. They could, of coulse, disobey the instinct if they wanted to enough, but are not inclined to.

My personal re-write of End Game (which will probably only ever exist in my head) has The Sanctuary being on Holy Ground. And when the others are beheaded there, Methos, being the oldest, gets a vision of it and one big mother of an instinct to go hunting for the guilty parties. I also thought it might make the guilty parties' buzz 'wrong', and drive other immortals to want to kill them *Shrugs*. It makes sense to me anyway.

I also read a an idea in a long-forgotten story once, that the destruction of Pompei was the result of an immortal battle to the end. Love that idea. J
