Dagonet remembered the first day the pup arrived. Tristan had called him that, and the name had stuck to the younger lad. He looked no more than ten, but he’d been twelve going on thirteen when he’d arrived. Gawain, two full years his junior, took to the sword better than he. This boy had been all about learning, and was squeamish about the art of killing. He got joy from learning. There was a light in his eyes that shone brighter than the sun when he read. That light had dimmed with each kill, more with each drink of ale.
