So, to start off, I want to say I went to my first Orthodox shul this Friday. Congregation Beth Jacob in Atlanta (there's a link to their web site in a comment to an earlier post) was very welcoming. I noticed a decided lack of women. But we weren't screened off in the back, merely sitting on the side behind a low wall with decorative meshing (I could still see the boys, hehe).
I'd never seen a synagogue where the men did the fast bobbing back and forth while praying, and the women were dressed modestly. The younger (unmarried, perhaps?) girls left after the main prayers and meet for a discussion on being a better Jew, and several people invited me to Shabbos dinner (which I politely refused, as I had plans with my very non Jewish boyfriend). I remembered not to shake any of the men's hands (isn't there some rule against that?), and the Rabbi I talked to was very nice. I was COMPLETELY lost during the service (I don't speak Hebrew) but I enjoyed it.
My first question is...should I talk to the Rabbi about staying with someone for Shabbat? I'm not Orthodox by any means, and I don't know the prayers for eating bread, or going to bed, or waking up, etc. I don't even know any Hebrew. But I kinda want to do it. What do you think?
Second question...what's the difference between Orthodox and Frum? Can you be one and not the other? What about between Modern Orthodox and regular Orthodox? Or black hat Yeshiva? The girls were mentioning these things in the little break away class, so I became curious (and I can't kind definitions on the web).
Thanks ya'll! I hope you had a Happy Shabbat!
