Ah, the joys of credit cards. . . .
This morning I just bought tickets to go see "Death Cab for Cutie" with "Tegan & Sara" next Wednesday with my nephew. I took him to his first concert a few years ago to see Green Day. We've also been to see the Red Hot Chili Peppers with Mars Volta and the Raconteurs. I'm glad he still wants to go with me -- after all, he is 17 now. Or maybe he's just smart enough not to turn down a free ticket. He may buy his girlfriend a ticket, which is totally cool, and they can hang out together and not necessarily be stuck with the adult all night. I wish I could just afford to take all of us. J. wasn't that interested in seeing them -- sure, he likes them but not necessarily for $35. He's more interested in seeing "Cold War Kids." Those tickets are only $15 and I can buy right at the box office and avoid the "convenience" charges. We missed seeing them for $5 last year as the car broke down on the way to the show last year, which totally sucked. I haven't even heard the new DCFC OR CWK albums -- guess I better buy them soon!
Even better, I bought tickets to see Margaret Cho on her new tour! She is playing in Columbus on October 11 (happy coming out day!) but I talked with J. and we decided to splurge and go to Cleveland for the weekend in November when she'll be there. After seeing I could only get the "NN" row, I decided to splurge further and get the more expensive tickets and was able to get seats in the pit! Yay! I'm super excited. We've seen her once before at the Mershon, I think, and it was hilarious as usual. I may see if I can get her to sign a tee shirt for me -- it's her on the front with "Hello, my name is Gwen" on the back. Gah, that takes me back to seeing a concert film of hers with Tad? I think we both laughed so hard that tears were just rolling down my face. I am looking at some package hotel/ticket things in Cleveland, since we'll probably go to the Rock and Roll Hall of fame while we're there. We'll probably stop by the CMA -- they've refurbished some of their galleries and it is a fantastic museum.
My parents and I will probably drive up to Cleveland for the day to see the exhibit showing there on Fabrege, Lalique, and Tiffany. It's a recreation of the 1900 worlds fair exhibit, and should be fantastic. We went to the AMAZING Fabrage (I have NO idea how to spell that, neither way looks right!) exhibit maybe 10 years ago there. Had a russian tea. J. is not really into seeing that -- deocorative arts, not his thing. Not necessarily my thing either, in that I'm not well verse in the decorative arts, but I love to look.
I feel glad I can splurge a little bit -- after the vacation tanked this year, I've really been wanting to just get out of town, even if it's a brief visit not that far away. I got a brochure last night for the Smith College Club travel tours -- oh my god, they ALL look amazing. Ranging from $3,000 to $21,000 per person -- but christ, they look absolutely fantastic. I had a little envy last night looking over it, but am smacked back into gratitude this morning for what I can do.
