assignment: use a lesser known painting as the subject for a poem; include the words "sycamore" and "nimbus"
“Love by the Pale Moon Light”
A phone box, its paint and glass
as red and fragile as Thorpe’s hero’s heart,
frames love exposed
for voyeurs far removed,
immortalised in sparing strokes
on an English village hilltop,
forsaken by the shade of night that ought
to cloak his sweet recall
of lovers’ moments shared
enshrouded in the sycamore’s shade.
Below, behind an unseen window’s frame,
she listens privately, alone with him
as he looks down upon her crooked grid
seen only from his perch above the fray.
The moon and its borrowed nimbus
transcend that veil, laying bare two scenes.
