I have decided, in lieu of studying for my very last college final ever, to write a review on Sex and the City. My best gay friend and I were talking about SATC a while ago, and he made me think about the characters, etc. So here is my excuse for not studying. I really liked the movie, and I think it did live up to its hype, but there are still things that have thrown me off. So while this will definitely be an opinioned review, I hope that there will be impartiality running through it as well. Lets begin with the character analysis:
BIG-I absolutely love him and I think he was given a bad rap in the entire movie (much like the show, he is portrayed negatively most of the time). I mean, sure, he was an ass for ditching Carrie at the wedding, but everything was Carrie's fault! First off, she is very spoiled, whiny, self-centered, overly materialistic, and inconsiderate. You would think after a 10 year relationship, she would at least know Big enough and respect his wish to have a private marriage. For a guy who isn't emotional and was already sensitive about the idea of marriage because it was his 3rd, Carrie was so wrapped up in herself, wanting to have a huge, fairytale wedding, and she never took Big's feelings into consideration. So, I dont really blame him for backing out. While he could have at least called, it is Carrie's fault. And the whole movie bashed on him after that, until the very end when they got back together. Okay, for a guy who doesnt write love letters (come on, guys dont do shit like that), or any letters at all, he poured his heart and soul into numerous letters and wanted to do everything to get her back. Of course, wait until the end before he gets credit for actually being a genuine guy. And how about the fact that he freaking bought a NY Penthouse for her, or the fact that he created a walk in closet for her shoes!?! Okay, if a guy created a walk in closet for my shoes, I would be beyond ecstatic. Big is a really good guy, and he gets a bad rap too often. I dont even think Carrie deserves him. She is the reason why they had a miserable 10 years together, even though she always complains to her girls that it is his fault. Luckily, she realizes what a selfish ass she had been all along, and then Big gets the credit for being a good guy. You disgust me, Carrie. Go BIG!!
CARRIE-ugh. As if you havent figured out where I stand with her, I do not like her. She is obnoxious and self-absorbed, and always act overly dramatic, even when things go wrong because of her. I mean, come on, the pity trip in Mexico was a little drawn out. Not that she wasnt hurting, but she could have prevented all of it in the first place. Now, what is the deal with blondes going brunette? Is that supposed to imply that Blondes are happy, and brunettes are not? I'm sorry, natural brunettes are attractive, fake brunettes are not! And her scene with no makeup on (thats when you realize how ugly SJP really is. Eck). Also, I noticed that I have NEVER seen her wear anything other than heels. Okay, now I have a fetish for them also, but seriously, do you ever wear anything else?! Do you also notice that she is the only one out of her friends that we never see a sex scene with her in it? (on the show and the movie). Does she not want us to see that, or is her sex life really that bad? Always made me wonder. Now, heres some positive comments. Carrie really is photogenic, and I thought the Vogue shoot was amazing. The only time I ever thought SJP was attractive in any movie. She exuded such elegance and grace and beauty, I was really surprised. But thats it. No more comments for you.
MIRANDA-Gotta love the intellectually and emotionally cold lawyer! I thought she looked amazing in the movie, and her hair was done perfectly. Of all 4, she had the biggest breakthrough. Although Steve cheated on her and the movie drags for almost 2 hours before they reconcile their differences, there is a lesson to be learned. If you are married, you better be having sex. Enough said. I really admired her when she finally figures her feelings out with Steve from her emotions rather than from a logical point of view. She finally learns to open herself up and allow herself to fully and emotionally love Steve. And snaps to the two awesome sex scenes, Steve rocks! I find him adorable (minus the cheating) and the fact that he is so attuned to Miranda's sexual needs makes him so much more attractive. Go Steve!
CHARLOTTE-I was disappointed with Charlotte, her chracter was pretty bland throughout the movie. Ok, we're glad that she finally has a happy family, great sex, and a pregnancy, but nothing new really happened with her. She wasnt much of a central character in this movie. However, there is one scene (although this is totally and racially inappropriate and probably not really funny) which made me crack up. When she gets paranoid about eating in Mexico, it totally sounded like something that I would think also. Just thought it was funny.
SAMANTHA-she is by far, my favorite character in the movie (and the show). She is smart, a good businesswoman, extremely independent, confident, fun-loving, funny, and very sexual. I like to think that I fit those categories (minus the sexual aspects, since she is the whore of New York). But she disappointed me slightly. I was expecting wild, random and crazy sex to occur, and yet she stays faithful. Now, thats great and Smith is a great guy, but this made her boring. I mean, if at the end, she ultimately decides that being single is better, then she might as well have slept with the hot guy next door (who we only see while he is having sex or naked. Yummy!). At least, thats what old Sam would have done. But kudos to being faithful. Just wish her character had a little more spice. At least she was funny as usual, and I was glad to see her again onscreen.
The real reason why I enjoyed the movie (despite the unexpected changes in all characters and the somewhat slow plot) is because of its central themes, also in the show: it is all about love, friendship and loyalty. It wasn't about how much money they made, how successful they were, or how materialistic they were (or how their lives are not typical of general women). It was about how they stuck together all these years, being each other's confidante, helping each other through thick and thin, being there in their darkest times, and enjoying each other's accomplishments and successes (through work, love, and friends). Their lives were enriched because they were witnesses to each other, watching one another grow, helping each other when their lives were falling apart, sharing their pain, joy, frustrations and happiness in life. These were the reasons why I was so attracted to the show in the first place. I admired and even envied the lives these women had, the bonds that held them together. Every time I watched it, I always hoped that one day I would have the same luxury of friendship and love as they did, because the rest of it doesnt really matter. Okay, I'll stop being so sentimental. Just wanted to say this because I get tired of people bitching and moaning about how unrealistic the show and movie is, and how it is unlike the book. HELLO! its a fantasy world! Its not supposed to be realistic!!! Stop focusing on the small details! Focus on the big themes of it, and forget the rest!! That way, you can really appreciate what SATC is all about.
Well, I hope everyone who saw it enjoyed it, because I know I did. :)
