Let me tell you about the nice thing my Dad did for me yesterday. (Uh, that would Saturday for those with a literal mind)
He went to Borders (to get a French phrasebook and mapbook for when he and Mum go off on Wednesday) and discovered, as there often is on Saturdays, that there was a signing. So he got talking to the author, one Russell Whitfield, who published his first book,
Gladiatrix, this year.
Dad has a good chat with him, which is possible when the author is relatively unknown and Borders doesn't advertise their signings very well, about all sorts of things. Including his daughter that wants to be a writer.
So, when Dad gets home, he gives me a copy of Gladiatrix. Signed by the author, to me, and carrying the personal message of "Don't stop writing!"
Messr Whitfield submitted his book 34 times before he got a publisher. I...I hope that it doesn't take me quite that long.
