As discussed in an earlier post, we'll be having a Showdown Challenge in March, so two of your moderators (alyburns & luna_61) have engaged in a sample Showdown. We set a deadline for the end of February, but as it happens, both mods finished early, so this post will show the results of the sample icon battle. *g

Yes, I am looking forward to perusing all the lovely J/B icons you talented folks will come up with. Where do you learn to do these?

You do need a program, like Photoshop, first of all. Although many computers come with some kind of photo fix program like Paint - and yep, these can be used to start with. Then as you get more proficient, you can upgrade. As for actually learning, there are several wonderful communities with tutorials - like icon_tutorials and many others that share textures and brushes etc, along with 'how to' posts:

icon_extras & icon_textures, for example.

There's one challenge group that's EXCELLENT for newbies because they use lots of different subject matters and the winners have to post a tutorial on how they acheived their icon. It's severalplums.

And of course, each fandom has its icon communities. :) You can just put your favorite fandom in the lj search engine (like, "SGA icons" or "Harry Potter icons" etc.) *g*

This challenge is the perfect place to start!

It is icon_tutorial Aly put an extra letter in name. *g* They are still up and running, you will find lots of tutorials there.
