I'm back!

Am back from holiday, spending the day in bed. Two days ago, I fell off a precipice (stupid guide book - in its pages, the contours are flattened to the point of disbelief), twisted my ankle, banged my knees, cut my hand. The bangs and cuts aren't bad, but my ankle (my joints are dodgy) is so sore that standing on it is painful. So, bed rest for me today, and downloading my life.

Flist, a favour. I'm looking to do patterns along the lines of this
(not the same, but something along these lines in terms of say, graphics, shapes and colour). What's a good programme to invest in? I assume that there are learning curves in all of them, but that's fine. My mind is ready. Also, because these things are investments, do I suck it up and get a mac from the get go, or can I stay with a windows OS?

Forgive the basic questions, but I haven't done anything art related in over a decade. I'm researching tablets, programmes, and investigating the idea of doing a few courses to get me up to scratch. Any advice would be gratefully appreciated.

Cheers!
