Life as a series of checkmarks

You know what was great about Kindergarten? Gold stars.

I've moved on to the Web 2.0 version now, though, with Joe's Goals. In the process of trying to get crap done more regularly, I stumbled on this as a way to track progress at various things. Be it exercise, cleaning the kitchen sink, or cutting out soda, you can boil it down to a nice series of checks and Xs. Scorecard for your week in trying to improve your good habits and cut out the bad.

Last night I made sloppy joes from a 'quick fix' cookbook I picked up in the checkout line, and they were damn tasty. In essence: cool chopped red pepper, garlic, and onion (omitted) in olive oil for a few minutes; toss in beef to brown; season with a mix of chili powder, cumin, cinnamon, black pepper, kosher salt; add tomato paste; cook until thick. Topped it with some shredded cheddar and sour cream and it was very good. Certainly beating the pants off Manwich.

Tonight is tortilla soup from the same book, calling for one of the grocery store roast chickens. Will be the first time I've disassembled a whole chicken for use in a dish, any tips?
