The seconds ticked by, moments lengthening to minutes. The silence that had descended immediately after the muted, almost green 'snap' had reached deafening levels. Yet still, she remained frozen where she stood, still as salt. Only her mouth moved, her lips, tongue, and jaws all working in tandem to push forth words that simply wouldn't come.
Hermione Granger was speechless. Had the circumstances been different, the object of her incredulity would have gloated. This, however, was not the time for sophomoric mockery. Even he was not so bold as to attempt a swagger now. So instead, he met her stunned gaze, his artic eyes as defiant as ever.
His fists unclenched; his finger relaxed their hold. She could only blink as he nodded a sharp salute, then turned on a heel and walked away. She stayed long after he had gone, staring down at two jagged lengths of hawthorn, and the single strand of shimmering white hair that lay tangled between them.
