By the subtle undertone of your post, I'm getting that someone has vexed you in some way? Would you like to talk about it?

Wow! That must have been really nice! UF is notorious for it's shameless fundraising. Although, in fairness, we do sometimes get gifts that we don't ask for. The guy who owns the New York Yankees actually donated the money to construct a new band facility (which, trust me, was badly needed) because he has a soft spot for marching bands and happens to own a home in Ocala, which is about 30 minutes from G'ville and UF. But normally, it's Machen and the rest brown-nosing for checks.

As far as I know, Machen has never given a class lecture here at UF. His speeches are always big publicity events.

And thank you for the warm wishes. I'm really hoping that somehow everything will work out, but to be honest, at this point, I'm not seeing it. The administration just doesn't seem to care what the student body, or even the faculty think, which has me quite worried since I'm applying to the English department for grad school at the end of this semester.

Actually, UF's previous president did get the boot because he made a couple of racial slurs. Maybe UF just has a habit of picking losers.

And I would love to go to a smaller school! Unfortunately, I don't think I'll be able to afford it. Although I am also applying to USF. Not exactly small, but smaller than UF.

Good luck with your own schooling! Maybe you could work out something where you only teach/hold office hours on two or three days of the week and you could work at the hospital the others?

One thing you have going for you, and against Machen, is don't large state universities have massive amounts of state red tape?

I'm wishing him an apoplexy. Hope that helps.

Thanks! Me too!

But as far as red tape goes, I hadn't actually thought of that, but I think this sort of thing is internal, so we don't really have to go through the state government or anything. But I'm not really sure. Of course, we have Bush's brother for a governer, so I'm not really sure that counting on the state to help is all that wise a thing to do, but hey, you could still be on to something. Here's hoping!

I suppose it doesn't help assuring that, however stupid economy is being handled by your head rector, US colleges and universities in general are still far better off than German universities?

Y'know, he might have got his ideas here, talking to the former educational minister of my home state.

They decided to raise fees (usually German University education is for free), but instead of giving the money to the universities and schools they decided to spend it somewhere else. After that they started moaning again of how well equipped US schools are and how badly Germany has scored in the last PISA testing.

What the heck?

lol Yeah, that sounds like something UF would do. Nearly every semester they raise tutition (though admittedly, we are one of the cheapest state colleges in the country) and then turn right around and whine about how they have less money than ever.

I think there's just something wrong with the people running unverisities.
