Transit

My train is coming. It’s about
time. I’ve been waiting for so long
that woman’s artificial voice
announced at least a dozen times:

An inbound train… will be arriving shortly.

But that train hadn’t come ‘til now.
There’s so much room in this El car
that I’m not looking at directly.
I’m staring straight ahead instead…

Doors open on the left at State and Lake.

My state was unrefined and left
behind until I reached my stop.
The lake was undiscovered frost
that gathers on the top of the world.

Beware of falling ice. [AON Center]

That crown-it melted down around
my eyes and years, and for ears to come
I will look up and watch the clouds
topple the building onto me.
