Portland didn't disappoint at all. Most of the hopefuls who earned those golden tickets really got into a storytelling mode when they sing. Tripster the Hipster surprised me in a very good way with her quirky charm ;)

Truth be told. I actually auditioned for Season 7 (the final season) of my country's Idol last week. It was insane. In a group of 40-50 ppl, only 1 got through... or even none at all! When I sang, they said I sounded a little too American for Indonesian Idol so I got passed on (which pretty much tells me where I should market my music). They got rid of a LOT of pros like unsigned singers who have been doing stuff on the radio for a very long time and all the unique-sounding ones as well.
That didn't make sense at all, but then again, we were facing the general crew members of the channel who didn't even have a musical background. Some of the ones who can't really belt a tune got through, though (for the sake of ratings when it airs on TV). I'm perfectly aware this is as much a TV show as it is a singing competition, so it also has everything to do with casting. Well, I made a few new friends so that wasn't such a disappointment ;) The Idol over here is a little different, as the ones who generally make the semifinals sound similar to existing mainstream artists - and some of the TV judges are condescending to the contestants. They're supposed to give constructive criticism when they don't like a performance and not tear them apart.
But anyway, at least I got to check out what the pre-casting room looks like. And I'm still proud of my audition song - "Oh Darling" (The Beatles). LOL. I'm still going to continue making music - I'm just doing it the old-fashioned way by sending out demos, putting out records, etc.
Quoting Brooke White and Jack Matranga (that's right, Jack & White) on their free show that I went to last November, "just put your own bucks into it". ;)
I'll be heading for Bali with my high school buddy Cindy Jane this coming Monday, where we'll be staying at the Hard Rock Hotel for two nights. This is a plan that has been taking a backseat for five years since our senior days, and now I'm stoked that we're actually embarking on this trip. Can't wait! LOL
