You know your chances of meeting your favorite artist in person are way bigger at a small concert venue. That's what happened when I attended the free Jack and White show at the Bootleg Bar in downtown LA last Monday. The place looked like a performing arts studio with only a few tables at sight, yet it gave off a warm, intimate atmosphere. Brooke White came out to almost every table and spotted a tall guy who stood right in front of where I was sitting. I waited patiently 'til she finished her chat, then the magic started when she turned her head around to see... me!!!
She was looking at me like I'm someone familiar. Then I showed her the signed Jack & White CD I got along with her pre-Idol album Songs from the Attic, and she asked me where my friends and I drove from before talking a little bit about the LA traffic and her previous free shows. The 3-minute chat felt very casual, which was awesome. I also introduced her to my friends Erica and Ryo. Shortly after she thanked me for supporting her, she chatted with some other people for a bit and headed for the stage with Jack and the band members. I'm still in awe that I got to meet the one person who got me into songwriting in the first place. All in all, it was a RETROFABULOUS night!
Jack and White played a short set featuring songs from their Gemini EP along with an ethereal cover of Fleetwood Mac's "Dreams". It seems like all my favorite people (a.k.a. the cool kids) have done Fleetwood Mac covers at some point. LOL. I especially enjoyed Jack's guitar runs during the "Dreams" performance.
