So today
fullmetalpussy (a.k.a. Large Marge), Marzipain and went down to lend support to the counter-protest against "Pastor" Fred Phelps and his mongers of hate (see previous entry). I mean, you know in your head that such people exist, but then to see people, real people, ten feet from you, holding signs reading "God Hates Fags and You Too," and shouting all sorts of stuff is a bit stupefying. They actually exist.
oh yeah they exist. . . in louisiana.
the god i believe in is a god of love, a god that is not bound by sexuality or race or creed or belief system or class. all human beings are capable of giving and receiving love and this is what makes us uniquely human.
and theoretically, phelps, being an american, should be allowed to say whatever the hell he wants. and i, being an american, have the right to publicly disagree with phelps. the problem i have is when people start invoking death and/or death threats to try and get their own idealogical beliefs across. whether it is the WBC picketing the funerals of dead marines or so called progressive liberals holding up signs saying "bomb the WBC", i don't care what side of the fence you're on, you are wrong.
there is a place for fred phelps in this country, just the same as there is a place for all of us in this country, that is until you start spouting hateful derogatory bullshit at your fellow man. in a perfect world, this would make sense. we don't live in a perfect world, and most of what i'm saying is probably just coming off as nonsense.
i guess my point is that i just think it sucks that there are so many people so willing to draw a line in the sand and asking the rest of us to choose sides. if this country ever wants to move forward we need to learn the concepts of tolerance and humility, or else we are doomed as a society.
rant over.
