Moving Sucks!

My roomates and I had to move out of our current place, and we found a place about 1.5 blocks away that is pretty nice and really cheap so that was good. We had to be out of our current place by saturday at noon, but got that pushed back to 6pm which was convenient because we were told we could move into the new place at 3pm. Because of the overlap, we only signed out two panel vans from the university for which they gave us keys in advance.

We got there friday afternoon and not one of the two vans was there! We went into the office and they had another van come in early and we got to take that. We went home and started packing but one of our roomates had to fly back for a conference. The next morning another one of the roomates had to fly back for the same conference so there was only 3 of us left. We packed up the first van saturday morning and got a call from out new landlord. Apparently the old tenants weren't ready to go by 3. When told of the situation, the tenants said "well why don't those guys help us move then". The landlord laughed and went out and got a moving company. The moving company got there and the tenants told them to leave because they didn't want any bad blood...said they'd get friends to help etc. Regardless, we weren't getting in there before 6 which sucked because we only had two vans and more than two vans worth of stuff. The landlord said we could just start moving stuff in at midnight regardless of whether the old people are gone or not. We decided to come drop off a load at the lab and go back.

When we got there we noticed one of the original vans that was reserved for us had shown up...our reservation had been cancelled, but we had keys. We were happy to steal, or as my roommate so eloquently put it 'skank', the van but there was some stuff in the back. A couple chairs a few shelves and an ancient looking electronic thing. We got the chairs and shelves into the lab fine but when we got to the electronic thing it wouldn't budge. Turns out it was a really old scintillator. Now I know that probably doesn't mean anything to most people, but it needs really good radiation shielding so bolted around the detector was about 150lbs of lead to go along with the 50-75lbs this thing already weighed. The two of us hauled it out and put that in the lab as well and took the van. We got another call from the landlord...his boss (this is a rental company) got mad at him and told him we weren't allowed to just show up at midnight and tell the old tenants to fuck off. He said he called the tenants and "told them how bad it could get if they weren't out by the morning". He told us to show up in the morning and give the cops a call if they were still there. This meant we needed a place to stay. We decided to worry about moving out first.

We went back and loaded up all three vans we had and everything fit! We didn't have to empty shit out. We could just park them and deal with it in the morning. We got back to the lab, grabbed our sleeping bags, brought out the tv and xbox and ordered pizza...first time I've ever slept at work. We woke up the next morning, got to the new place and nobody was there! We moved all of our stuff in which wasn't too fun because we're on the top of a six floor building with no elevators. After we were finished, we went back to return the vans and rememeberd about that scintillator which looks heavy, but is actually 3 times heavier. We put that back in the van and parked the 'skanked' van were we found it. We finally went out for breakfast at around 2pm. After eating a huge breakfast we went home and I had the first shower I'd had in 35ish hours. We started emptying the boxes and got the living room and kitchen stuff done before going to bed (and what a nice bed it was) and we only have some tiny bathroom stuff left (at least I do...I know my other roomates went to bed early and still haven't deal with their rooms). The new place is a bit smaller in the living room/dining room/kitchen department, but the bedrooms are bigger, there is a nice patio (need to buy a bbq) and two bathrooms! (important for a house of five)

So that was my weekend...doesn't it sound fun?
