Well thanks to
subapooh I finally figured out (got told) how to do this whole cut thing so people on not so quick connections don't have to waste their time waiting for pics to load.
Derek, Guilliome and I drove down friday after school and came back wednesday night. A very nice trip that after all calculations were done cost me $144 including gas, food, some video games and a tiny bit of alcohol ................I'll have to do this more often :o
Well the first stop was a pretty obvious choice.
Got the box pictured above along with a box of plain glazed.......add to that the whole bunch of free ones we got hot off the press and yes we are a bunch of pigs :p.
Next we stopped for something to eat and the highway signs said pizza next exit, but we weren't too keen on finding out what goes on at Dirty Dave's Gay 90's on a friday night. Three guys from Vancouver going to san Fransisco.........not a good scene.
Spent Friday night in a hotel in southern Oregon and slept in a bit the next morn. We got in saturday evening and proceded to get a bit drunk at my aunt's place although her and her two friends had about 5 bottles of wine on us by the time we got there :o. We did our best to catch up :D.
Sunday we decided to check out San Fransisco not realising that there was a) an anti war protest going on and b)chinese new year celebrations. We got over the Bay Bridge and the cops just kept diverting traffic to the right........which was actually pretty convenient, because before we knew it we were right by Fisherman's Wharf. We parked and walked around a bit. The sign on the parking garage was kinda funny. I guess people sue for anything nowadays :o. Alcatraz ferries had a one day wait, but we did most of the other touristy things. Walked past all the Pier's headed uphill to Lombard St etc. then decided to check out hte financial district and chinatown. having all the streets shut down was actually pretty nice and it was fun seeing all the people. Went up Coit Tower (obviously not named by somebody who speaks French) and then ended up accidentally walking through XXX district on our way back to the car. I'm still not so sure about all the visual aids.......I know what XXX is, you don't have to show me in all it's glory. Anyways, got down to the car and did a nice scenic drive around the golden gate and headed south down the 101 on the west side of town.
On our way home we saw signs for Stanford and though that would be pretty cool to see even if it was dark and a holiday weekend. Didn't get into SLAC because of the time and due to the time and a "code orange" whatever that means. The campus itself was almost disgustingly well kept.......there wasn't even a blade of grass pointed the wrong way. We walked by gravity probe B. A nice example of a botched experiment. 30 years of funding and almost every question it set out to answer has already been answered by others yet still more funding 'cause they're too deep into it now :o.
Monday we took a trip down the coast. Stopped in Santa Cruz for a bit and then proceded down to Monterey. Beautiful area and some breathtaking views. We finished off the afternoon with the 17 mile drive along the coast and past Pebble Beach. Laguna Seca unfortunately had nothing going on that weekend, but it would have been cool to watch some sort of race :).
That evening we went out and met
beanie13 at D&B. She had to point out to me that me pronouncing "z" zed instead of zee was what was confusing the cashier dude so much :o. I didn't even realise it. We played some video games and then played a bit of pool. Beanie and I kicked ass at the pool table - w00t! :D. Unfortunately both of us forgot about the whole 'both her and I in the same picture' thing :p.
The next morning we decided to check out the universities. First we headed up to Berkley because we thought traffic north was probably better than traffic south.......I think we were right. Berkley itself is also a beautiful campus and I love the hillside location overlooking the rest of the bay.
We then headed off to NASA Ames later on in the afternoon, but got there after the last tour. We still got to poke around the visitor center and got a pic of the biggest wind tunnel I've ever seen
We decided to head back to Stanford that evening to get a feel for the atmosphere with actual people around. It was too dark again to get any good pics though.
Wednesday morning we took off around 6:30am and were back in Vancouver by 9pm. All in all a wonderful trip and considering the cost I'm sure we'll do it again in the not so distant future :)
