I just finnished watching "Donnie Darko" again. There are a few things that come to mind when I was getting to the end of the movie that make this film kick arse!
1) The way it ended, there is no room for a sequel. So, no chessey sequelness!
2) This movie shows you that your existence impacts other people. This was my second movie today where death was a slight topic. If you remove yourself from the equation, you take away so many important things that you will create and impact in this world. He met a girl, they had a romance, I think they lost their virginity (I think that was the idea), and then, because he was still living, a few people died. His girlfriend, his mother, his sister, and Frank. Now that is the extreme. He also had impact on the school. He woke people up! He exposed people for who they were, and also knocked people off of their high horses.
...So if you ever are feeling insignificant.... STOP IT! We all have a place in this world. When he went back, and corrected everything, as it should have been, and died, all of the good stuff that happened was erased. I thought about that and thought it was a shame. The impact of losing your virginity is an event, at least for most people I think it was/is.
3)The time travel portals looked like tornados. Hmmm.... I'm being silly! Um, really, though.... I was thinking that the portal was prolly the cause for the plane getting crashed. So, if the portal never happened, then two people wouldn't have had to be saved.
