My extremely long-winded, detail stuffed, SPOILER-ific running commentary/recap. It's really long. That means I really liked it, otherwise I wouldn't have spent the time to type it up.
Battlestar Galactica 3.02 Exodus Part 1_ Jaz Running Commentary
SPOILERS LIEK WOAH!!!!!!!
My like for Cally may be wishy-washy at best, but I love the Cheif and his concern for his wife and how off-balance her impending death knocked him. I mean didn't even think about the cipher that got from Geata to decipher Cylon coordinates, he was just completely freaking. Good God, Cheif listen to Tigh and don't get you self killed, because Tigh is right about the last thing anyone's son wants is Tigh and Ellen for parents! Well, Tigh might be ok, and maybe even cool on occassion, but the CrazySlutBitchCylonInformant? I am thinking not so much...
On the upside, Galen Tyrol shaved and nixed the glasses! *fangirling* My beautiful Galen Tyrol, you're back to your handsome, youthful, sexy self!
So they re-showed the whole Sharon and Raptor Co. landing on New Caprica. Loved Gunny(Sharon's 2nd-in-command=2IC)and her addresing of Sharon as LT (like the Chief and others called the late Crashdown when they were stuck on Kobol). It showed Sharon and RCo. making their way from the landing sight to the rendevous point. Sharon sent her people to cover the Rendevous Pt. while she went to meet them. I really liked when Sharon was in the woods alone on the far bank, looking down at the map and looking around. She seemed to be thinking 'Is this it? I guess...To hell with' before yelling out "Go Panthers!". This also means we saw the Sharon/Anders Hug again. I think I 'll call this scene The Hug Remix. Also the score has been changed, so it is not the same "Intense Ambush Foreshadowing" track anymore. Dare I say it is more friends re-uniting [*cough*Romantic!*cough* *is shot*]
There is also more talking between Sharon and Anders before the Cylons attack. As we saw before, several of Anders' guys were shot almost imediately but Sharon, Anders, and at least one more guy get of the bank and start into the woods. For a second there, they are pinned down. Anders says they need to make a run for it, but Sharon says "Stay put. Trust me." Which he does and is saved from being blown up with the cylons as Raptor Co. fire off and RPG. Anders thanks her and the cylons are killed.
Move to the Firing Squad place, Tyrol and some of his resistance friends arrive just after the trucks arrive. They see the trucks unloaded. Cheif sees Cally, and also Roslin and Zarek. When Jammer freed Cally and told her to run, she got between Tyrol's gang and the Centurions, making it impossible for them to shoot unless they want to hit Cally as well (which I really may not have had a problem with). Chief tells his chick-2IC to count to 5 and then shoot, before running off to Cally. His 2IC counts "one one thousandths, two one thousanth..." at five Tyrol basically tackles Cally out of the line of fire and Tyrol's crew shoot the Centurion. Roslin throws herself at Zarek, sending them rolling down a small hill and out of bullet range. Zarek flirts with Roslin and I think they have so much awesome chemistry. NEW(already existing) SHIP! Roslin/Zarek - I know people have done it before, I just wasn't one of them...
Back to Sharon, Anders, et. al. Gunny says that the cylons knew the exactly where they would be. One of Anders' guys find The Map Ellen Stole on a dead humanoid Cylon. BTW, Anders 2IC who found the map is none other than Ladon, current leader of the Genii, from Stargate Atlantis. I think we later learn his name is Connor(he will be know as Connor-2IC). Anyways, Anders, being the smart person he is imediately connects the dots and correctly accuses Ellen.
I just want to quickly mention that I really think that Three's dream, her crisis of faith, her plot line are very intriguing. She dreams of visiting a human seer/prietess and then holding a baby in her arms.
So apparently Baltar's depression is effect him sexually, and Caprica Six is trying to comfort him. Meh. I miss InYourHead Six, who messed with his head, popped up at inconvient times, and sometimes was a bully but really protected Baltar actually. Loved the conversation with Doral that Baltar mentioned, I find it hilarious that Doral thinks that sanitation and more toliet paper is the key to winning the hearts of the humans. At the end of the scene when they are both sitting on the bed, not facing each other, the music changed and I hoped for InYourHead Six, but alas it was not meant to be...yet.
I loved Maternal!Kara babbling on to little, aborable Kasey. How is her named being spelled: Kasey or Kacey? I've seen it both ways on different journals. For now I stick with Kasey with a "S". I don't know how I felt about Leoben watching from the stairs. Was he supposed to be in disbelief? Or maybe hopeful? I couldn't tell. But I did recognize
the ehru that is the center of the Kara/Kasey/Leoben musical theme. Loved Dodona, the Kamala-licking, candy-craving seer that Three visited. She was brilliant. One minute completely serious, sage-like, and all mystical and the next she is wishing for chocolate caramel! And how about Three's "There is no Zeus. There is no god but God." line? Straight out of Islam if you ask me and quite possibly anyone who even knows a Muslim. Especially right in the middle(ok so not exactly, but close) of the month of Ramadan? *nodnod* The seer tells Three that she will hold Hera in her arms and know true love, but she will lose everything she work for on New Caprica.
Helo. More imprtantly: Helo's hair - a vast improvement over last week's monk-like hairdon't. I liked Helo and Dee's convo and him reassuring her and whatnot , it was sweet.
Loved the togetherness/undividable prayer thing, with the Pegasus and Galactica crews on the right and left (respectively)of a salt line and breaking the line between them. They kind of did that Peace handshake thing from Catholic mass and the scene ended with group mixing, hugging, handshaking, and saying goodbye before the Galactica leaves to save the humans on New Caprica. Also switch Sharon/Anders goggles to Stealth Ship Helo/Kat goggles: before the line erasing thing, when Racetrack was reading from the holy book, there was a nice Stealth Ship Helo/Katshot of tiny little Kat with taller-than-a-tree Helo looming just behind her. ^.^ It was a cute picture!
Move to Adama and Apollo on the Galactica Hanger deck. Adama mentions Lee's frequently and noticable glances at his watch. Switch goggles from Stealth Ship to Dark Ship goggles: Lee say that he was just thinking about Sharon and and how she must be on the ground by now. Anyways, Lee is back to being likeable, instead of the stuck-up brat he was last week. He is the loving son who is nearly breaking down because he thinks that he'll never see his dad again and they just only got back on good terms. I liked Adama's line "Don't make me cry on my own hanger deck" (cue me: Aaaawwww!)and his saluting Lee as he boarded his Raptor to go back to Pegasus. The scene was accompanied by one of my favorite muscial tracks which I know as "A Good Lighter/Wander My Friends", the celtic sounding theme for the father-son relationship, ususally played by pipes, bagpipes, and/or fiddle(It is talked about in McCreay's blogpost linked below).
Three visits Doc Cottle who just saved a Five(Which one is that? Simon? Name please!) who was shot up by some humans. She says he could have let the Five suffer, but the Doc says that that's not what he does. He is a doctor and he helps, that is his job. Three asks him why he creamated the first cylon/human hybrid and Doc lies horrible saying it was the presidents call. This results in the confirmation of what the seer said about baby Hera being alive for Three.
We are at one of the Prez Baltar/Cylon councils and the Cavil that was killed at the firing squad thing explains how he was left to suffer and managed to slit an artery with a bullet casing. He says that the first time he downloaded he just got a headache, but this 3rd time it felt like "a white-hot poker" right into his head. This enough to stop this particular model about caring about what is being discussed at the council. He says "It's not worth it. None of it is" and leaves. Three says that a unified stand use to be easy for the cylons, but now they have begun to splinter. Doral says they have to crack down on the humans and Caprica Six asks how?, their force are already stretch to the max. Doral suggests they simply nuke the planet with the humans on it. Methinks that "nuking" stuff -whether it be ships, planets, humans- is the default solutions for any problems the Cylons encounter.
Back to New Caprica City. Sharon is changing into her civilian clothes and Anders tells her to leave her dogtags, that any cylon who sees them will know who she is. He also tells her how to get into the Cylon Detention center. He warns her to stay away from people on the street because the random human will simply think she is another cylon and won't mind gutting her with a knife. Sharon answers with "Right. Thanks for the concern. Makes me all warm and fuzzy inside." Connor-2IC brings in Ellen, and Anders orders that she be taken into the little underground place under the carpet, and held there. As Sharon is leaving, Anders calls ou to her and in a moment strangling reminescent of
koalathebear's
Precipice Tag Fic, Anders calls out to Sharon: "Wait. Sharon. Do me a favor. Keep an eye out for Starbuck..."(who he hasn't seen in four months) to which Sharon replies "I'll do what I can". Sharon heads out and Anders goes to the secret underground resistance place. I, personally, am still stuck on the fact that Sharon was changing infront of Anders! *floats off to Shippy-Land*
Roslin and Anders are in the undergrounds cave place and talking about Maya and babyHera (who is called Isis). Roslin says they must not fall into enemy hands, and Anders assures her that they'll be kept safe and moved around every couple of days with other high level targets as to decrease the chance of being found. Anders wonders why the kid is so important and Roslin says "She maybe the shape of things to come. That's either a blessing or a curse." In only a brief few moment, during which Anders glances back and forth between Roslin and Hera, he seems to do the math and figure it out. I hope that those people who think he is just a jock who likes to abmush cylons and blow up cafes realize that Anders is actually very quick and has brains...to go along with that sexy body and hot voice! ^___^;;;
Move to the Strategy room of the resistance clubhouse. A meeting of Anders, Conner-2IC, Roslin, Tigh, Chief, Zarek, Roslin's Secretary Amanda(I think it was Amanda), and Gunny-2IC, along with some of Raptor Co. and some of Anders's men. Being that they are in the Strategy room, they are strategizing the evac. The city is broken up into blocks with leaders you lead the people through designated escape routes to the ships(once Sharon has the key thingies) to leave. They have practice using the excuse of fire and natural disastor prep. Anders introduces two of his guys, Maya and Hera's new bobyguards, who will stay with them always and get them of the planet at any cost or something. Roslin shakes their hands and says "I am trusting you, because I trust him[Anders]." After they have gone through the escape plan, Ellen is brought in. Anders and Connor-2IC explain how she betrayed them and how they found the map Anders drew and gave to Tigh. Ellen confess that she did it-she did it for him and she gave the map to a Brother Cavil who threatened to take Tigh again. The look in Tigh's eye when she says that...wow.
Sharon gets into the compound suceesfully. She goes up the this little podium console that project streaming infor/writing on Sharon. Quite similar to the Wraith and Ancient screensavers that are project on people in Stargate Atlantis. Hope someone makes icons of it. Anyway she get the keys and Three shows up. Sharon points her gun at Three, and Three tells her she is betraying her own kind. Sharon says she is an officer and gave her word. She tells Three that she is not going to kill her but would her so she won't be able to tell the others. Three tells Sharon about Hera being alive, about her dreams and how Seer Dodona told her she would hold Hera and know true love. She promises that if Sharon puts the gun down she would be able to hold Sharon as well. Sharon looks hesitant before blowing out Three's knees. "Adama wouldn't lie to me." Oh, Sharon.*le sigh* Well this is defintely getting worse before it gets better.
Sharon drops the launch keys(that's what they are called) to Tyrol. She congratulates him for the baby and asks his name. The baby is Nicholas, after Cally's father (or grandfather, I forgot). Sharon asks if he saw Hera's asheswhen he went with Helo to spread them, to which he replies that he did. Sharon tells Chief to tell Cally to never let babyNick out of her sight before walks away looking like she breaking down. *sniffle*
Back at the Galactica. Helo reports to Adama, in his office, that Sharon got the launch keys, and thene leaves(back to CIC, I assume). Adama punches his desk, think in victory or something.
Quick move RecRoom. Racetrack and Kat are anxious like you wouldn't believe, which I thiught brought another layer of believability to the scene. Racetrack is pacing and doing that snap/clap thing I could never get and Kat is sitting at a table with her head in the hands and her leg bouncing likr crazy. A ring of the phone snaps them out of it and Racetrck answers. "It's time to go" she anounces to Kat.
Adama has a great speech about saving their people and serving with heroes. He talks about how they would become legend and their story would be told through the ages. My favorite line of the speech is the title of this post "...and find immorality as only the gods once knew."He ends with the usual good luck, good hunting. TBC next week with 3x03 "Exodus Part II".
Oh and I decided what I was calling Sharon/Anders. Sharon/Apollo is the Dark Ship, Helo/Kat Helo/Racetrack is the Stealth Ship, and even though it is not really creavite Sharon/Anders is the Rebel Ship. Because I said so. Yeah.
ETA: I kept calling Helo/Kat the Stealth Ship when it is in fact Helo/Racetrack who are the Stealth Ship...Ooops?! Yeah I fixed it. Does Helo/Kat have a cool [Something] Ship nickname? And how silly was I for making that mistake? I have read Stealth Ship fic! *is ashamed* Thanks to
sabaceanbabe for correcting me.
Lastly, Bear McCreay put up
his blogpost for "Exodus Part I". For those who don't know, Bear McCreary is the composer for BSG.
The first three episodes underwent some major surgery in the post-production process, even before I was brought on board to score. This is most evident in this week's "Exodus, Part I." Scenes that were cut from 301 and 302 got nudged into this week's episode...
