I didn't pick up as many discs in 2005 as I should have, so perhaps I'll need to revisit this list after I get more disposable income to burn. As it stands though, these are my ten favorite records released this year. I'll dispense with any paragraph-long justifications for why they're on the list. At the bottom is a link where you can compare my list (and yours) with about 1000 (ok, like 40) other Top Eleven lists. (FYI, even though Arcade Fire is on so many of the lists on this site, their album was originally released in 2004, not 2005. Apparently it came out in 2005 in some European countries.
1) Decemberists - Picaresque
2) Bloc Party - Silent Alarm
3) White Stripes - Get Behind Me Satan
4) Iron & Wine - Woman King ep
5) Living Things - Ahead Of The Lions
6) Kaiser Chiefs - Employment
7) Sufjan Stevens - Illinois
8) Antony & The Johnsons - I Am A Bird Now
9) Fiona Apple - Extraordinary Machine
10) Death Cab For Cutie - Plans
11) Raveonettes - Pretty in Black
Albums that might have been included if I had heard more of them: Sigur Ros -- Takk; Franz Ferdinand -- You Could Have It So Much Better; Garbage -- Bleed Like Me)
February update: ok, so I've changed my mind recently, after having heard a couple of new cds all the way through and revisiting some records from earlier in the year. It's my journal -- I can do that if I want to. I feel like I need to hear the Sigur Ros, Franz Ferdinand, and Garbage cds all the way through now before I consider this list set in sorta wet concrete, if not stone...
