So far I'm not exactly drag-ass tired, but I'm sure I will be by the end of the day. Having only gotten 4 1/2 hours of sleep, then having two community meetings to go to tonight means when I roll back home around 8:30pm I'll probably grab a little food and then go straight to bed.
But last night was worth it. I headed out to Chances when I saw they were having a collection for Hurricane Katrina victims and matching $1 for every $2 donated. When I first got there I was disappointed: I didn't hear any of the music I was expecting, and when I asked the bartender who I was supposed to give my donation to, he just shrugged and took another order. So I called
Moonraye to see what she was doing, because I was gonna bug out of there. But she didn't answer, and I figured I'd give it a few more minutes, which turned out to be just the right recipe. The bartender came back and said he was sorry he didn't have the info I needed, but he had just found out about the collection when he clocked in a few minutes before, and it wasn't being handled by the bar itself (the organizers finally came around with the jar, though, so that problem was solved). And then almost immediately the dj started spinning, and the night really took off. I met Lesley and Sari, two roomies who just moved to the Alberta neighborhood; Gina, one of the few who stayed on the floor non-stop along with me; and Magnus, who let me help him out on one of those "find the different items" bar video games that sucks the money out of your wallet at a slightly lower rate than beer.
The music was tight, with some great mixes of things like Interpol and The Rapture, along with more unlikely tracks by Kylie Minogue, Michael Jackson and more. But the second dj totally wrecked the system sometime after midnight, and had the desperate and dazed look of someone who can't figure out what happened to the laptop. I've been there. Anyway, I took that as a sign to head out, which several of us did, although I could hear the thumping start up again once I was outside, so hopefully the rest of the crowd were able to jump back into it.
Currently, I am actually awake and feigning some sort of productivity. It won't last.
