And.... THE MCMASTER TA STRIKE IS OVER!!!! WOOHOO
Here's to the end of a very nerve-wrecking week of the McMaster's TAs strike. I was rather thankful that none of my courses were affected too much. The strike on a whole wasn't about raising wages or anything (which possibly should have been a factor, since Mac TAs are paid the least out of ... Ontario's universities I think. Might be Canada's O.O). All they wanted were an extra 10 hours of pay added to their wages. I didn't think that was too hard for the university to give them, but the continuously refused.
The strike mostly dealt with Humanities/Social Science TAs - as they're the ones who mark the papers. They're given 10 hours to mark papers that actually take about 30 hours. They just wanted a bit more pay for the hours they are actually working.
I actually felt a bit bad for them in the end. McMaster hasn't changed their offer since August, and it was the same offer they finally agreed to accept last night. Mac really wasn't changing its mind (which was a bit stupid, considering it wasn't much they were asking for). So in the end, nothing has changed. If anything I think they striked for a week, decided they were tired of it, and just accepted the offer to end the strike and get back to work.
I love having lazy but workaholic TAs XD It's so nice to be able to take a bus into campus again. And of course, having some of my tutorials back :3
I shudder to think of the next time the contract is up though, in a couple years. Considering they got nothing they wanted this time. >.
