Texas
It's All Over the Place

Captain's Log: 9.05.06
(Archived Captain's Logs)

We left Tulsa with our heads hanging a bit low; we were supposed to rendezvous with Matt's step-brother way out in the Oklahoma countryside to shoot a full vocabulary of guns, ranging from precision rifles to shotguns to hand cannons. We'd left the company of our new friends Erin and Hannah (after a late night breakfast and a rooftop slumber party just as the sun came up) to hit the flea market, and spent a little too much time looking through used cowboy boots and broken accordians.

We played a small albeit intimate show at a new miscellaneous DIY store in Denton, TX called Strawberry Fields. We were invited to join our friend Luke at his house to party Denton style with the local crew, and I ended up having a blast - we bid them our short term farewells (we play Denton once more on this tour) and five episodes of laptop stereo-sound Seinfeld later we were in Austin.

At sunrise, with no contact or place to stay, we took up temporary residence in Barton Springs Park - I played guitar on a rock by the spring to an audience of swans and later met up with the others, who had taken to using clothing as blindfolds to sleep until 11AM.

Seth and Rhonda live just outside of the city, and their home was an air conditioned palace when we arrived. I read about the genius inventor Nikola Tesla, highlighting key moments in his adolescence while Matt and Shawn slept and Jonny bought a BMW Motorcycle. My new Austinite friends and I filmed a bloodcurdling kitchen table war between every action figure and stuffed animal within the vacinity - needless to say the horse one the prized blueberry muffin they all died for. The show was well attended and our audience was attentive and polite - our best show yet - and since we've had the chance to get to know our hosts a bit better. Dollar bowling and pawn shops. The Pinata District. Whole Foods Headquarters. Austin is a beautiful town.
