Love is the Devil

I finally got to see Love is The Devil - a film based on the true story of the relationship between famous painter Francis Bacon + his lover, George Dyer (who was 30 years his junior + they met when George tried to burgle him). FB is played by Derek Jacobi + GD is played by Daniel Craig. They are both very good in it.

I loved the visual style of the film (there are also a lot of people from the fashion/art world as extras such as Pam Hogg, Sue Tilley, Anita Pallenberg, Tracey Emin etc.) and it is very sad as it basically depicts their relationship going wrong - I think FB did love George but only in an almost abstract way (mainly for the sex). I don’t think he treated him that well. And George, altho’ you could argue you would think he held all the power in the relationship as he’s the dominant/sadist in bed to Francis’ submissive/masochist and he’s a butch working class man he’s also vulnerable and insecure and feels alienated from Francis’ friends/art world. His drinking/drug taking increases as his mental health worsens and he can’t cope with Francis’ infidelities. In the end George committed suicide.

I really liked the film + thought the 2 leads were both excellent - DJ in portraying a monstrous genius who wants to love someone but finds the reality of a relationship difficult and DC is absolutely heartbreaking as George. (plus I am shallow and shall say that Daniel Craig looks gorgeous in this and spends a great deal of time in just his underwear and there’s also a full frontal nude scene.)
