Telegraph at the weekend had a big feature on Dr Who’s 50th anniversary show (not long now!) plus Mark Gatiss talking about his drama based on the start of Dr Who, An Adventure in Space + Time (apparently it’s being shown on BBC2 on 21st November at 9pm). They also had interviews w/Lorde and playwright Jez Butterworth (discussing Mojo).

Times at weekend had a little mention for Series 3 of Sherlock plus a review of The Vampyre Family and a photo of Anna May Wong to illustrate a review of The Valley of Amazement by Amy Tan.

They also had an interesting article by Allie Brosh writing about depression (she has a book called Hyperbole and A Half). They also had an interview w/Joan Collins and her husband Percy Gibson (they still seem to be going strong despite the 32 yr age gap + the fact it’s her 4th or 5th marriage, I forget which). There was an interesting article by Caitlin Moran about being a teenage girl to tie in with the sitcom based on her teenage years which is due to start soon and there was an article about teenagers + online dating (I’m not convinced all modern teenagers are totally sex mad and sending naked/porn-y photos to each other etc. - I’m sure some of them do but I don’t think it’s as universal as the media like to claim).

I also recently re-read the screenplay for Almost Famous. One thing that bugs me is Bebe Buell’s insistence that the character of Penny Lane is based on her. Cameron Crowe was quite graceful about it + said he’d been inspired by all the girls he met at the time but I don’t think BB is that close a fit for Penny Lane. For one thing, Bebe was slightly older than Penny is supposed to be (19 as opposed to 16 or so that Penny claims), she never really travelled round/hung out with a group of other girls (like Penny did), she was working as a model (Penny doesn’t seem to have a job) and she was already in a relationship with Todd Rundgren (Penny isn’t in a steady relationship with anyone).

And also there was a real-life groupie called Penny Lane at the time. I know because she’s mentioned in the book Rock + Roll Babylon which came out way before the film Almost Famous did + she talks about her gang of groupie girls being known as The Flying Garter Girls. She also gave interviews a few years ago + said she did the groupie-thing for a few years when she was a teenager then moved on. I think she now does some sort of corporate job in America which is why she didn’t really cash in on her notoriety when Almost Famous was released.
