Apparently there’s going to be a TV series based on Terry Gilliam’s Twelve Monkeys film next year - I must admit I’m curious as to how that’s going to work out.
Also Shortlist had an interesting article last week by Brett Martin based on his book, Difficult Men, about how the current golden age of TV is predominantly based on male anti-heroes. I think he has a point but there are a lot of great female characters in shows like Game of Thrones, The Hour, etc as well as more female-centric shows like Orange is the New Black. I must admit tho’ that for some reason a lot of the TV shows I like, it’s the male characters that I’m drawn to a lot of the time. That doesn’t mean to say I ignore the women (I have a lot of love for characters like Jenny/Vastra and River Song from Dr who and Bel and Lix and Marnie in The Hour) but equally I don’t disregard a character just because he’s male. Maybe it’s an opposites attract thing, who knows?? I do think there needs to be a lot more diversity on TV tho’ but that also goes for the type of men they portray and the sort of storylines they get as well as just generally having more women in. Which makes it sound like I’m going but what about the men? It’s not something I can explain easily - I just think why should I not like a character or not be interested in them just because they’re male?
They also had a very funny interview w/James Spader - I really need to see that new series he’s in, The Blacklist.
Also mentioned upcoming TV shows including the new series of Fresh Meat - apparently Vod brings back a friend called Javier from her South American travels + Oregon becomes a bit of a feminist playwright. I can’t wait to see it!
Stylist also had a tribute to Just 17 - which I used to read religiously way past the age of 17. It used to be quite alternative for a teen girls’ mag in 80s/90s UK - they used to have pin-ups of Slash from Guns N’ Roses and Kirsten Hersh discussing her mental illness. It was such a cool magazine back in the day - I really wish they’d do a book of it like they did with Jackie and Cosmopolitan.
