Dr Who

I have seen a lot of speculation about who the new Dr Who should be. Honestly, I can't pick a favourite. I can think of tons of actors who could probably do a great job with it (tho' let's be honest, it's the writing they need to work on at the moment) but I think a lot of them would probably steer clear - it's a big commitment and like it or not, it does tend to be the one role that defines that actor's career (I mean, yes they do go on + do other stuff but they're always known as Dr Who but then I suppose that's not necessarily a bad thing) and it is quite a high profile role in terms of the amount of publicity they have to do for it but also the attention that it brings (both from the media and the fans). For instance, I think Ben Whishaw would make a good Dr but I honestly can't see him taking the role even if he was offered it + he seems quite shy anyway so I imagine the level of fandom/public attention the Dr attracts might just be too much for him. Likewise, Benedict Cumberbatch would have made a good Dr but I think now he's got his eyes firmly fixed on making it in Hollywood (alongside doing theatre/TV work in the UK - but I don't think he'd want to tie himself down to a long running series like Dr Who + he's already got Sherlock). I think also if a name is too well-known, for instance suggestions of Helen Mirren or Helena Bonham-Carter then maybe it's hard to suspend disbelief and see them as the Dr. (dunno if I agree but now I'm going to have hours of fun imagining various actors as the Dr. - Al Pacino? Ewan McGregor? Ian McKellen? Samuel L.Jackson? Zawe Ashton? )

I think Damien Molony would be a good choice. Or personally I would go for Tom Hughes or Harry Lloyd (the only problem being they're a bit too similar to what's gone before) - there are so many names that come up that I love the sound of but I still think it comes back to the fact that the writing isn't that strong at the moment so I worry that whoever takes it on is going to be saddled with a show that's on the verge of going downhill rapidly.
Because I'm having a bit of a David Bowie phase at the moment I'm going to say Bowie as the Dr with Lou Reed as the Master and Iggy Pop and Debbie Harry as the companions who are a will-they-won't-they-couple, Tina Turner as River Song and Mick Jagger as Captain Jack.

benedict cumberbatch, lou reed, david bowie, damien molony, dr who, ben whishaw, tom hughes, debbie harry, iggy pop, harry lloyd
