Sickness, Solid Snake, and Smash

Feb 20, 2008 13:09

I shouldn't have joked about calling in sick. I got sick myself, tried to go in on Monday, and gave up halfway through the day. Tuesday I felt worse and just stayed home. Today I didn't have a fever and felt about 75% okay, so here I am at work. It's looking like I'll be able to get through the day.

Stephanie is still sick. She went to work on Tuesday (and they sent her to Jefferson City to help out a branch down there) and intensely regretted it. She took today off.

On the bright side, yesterday I finally beat Metal Gear Solid. I don't remember if I've talked about it before, but it's the best action dramedy soap opera I've ever played. I don't understand the people who say Snake won't fit in a Smash Bros. game; blood, bullets, and environmental message aside, the game plays with the fourth wall so much and takes itself so not-seriously I think Snake fits with the regular Nintendo crew better than Samus Aran does (and she fits in quite well).

I'm more surprised that Grey Fox made it into Smash Bros. as an assist trophy; he seems like one of the most serious characters in Metal Gear Solid, partially because he's so mysterious.

That said, the finale was very much WTF and one aspect of it almost made me not like the whole ending. Those of you who haven't played the game, use caution when reading the comments because somebody is likely to call me out on that statement and the discussion will require Spoilerage.

Anyway, I definitely see why Kojima and Sakurai get along so well (which is how Snake ended up in Smash Bros. in the first place). They seem to have pretty similar game design philosophy.

Random thoughts of the day--Other characters who would have worked well in Smash Bros. Brawl but didn't make the cut: (potential spoilerage below, but I think all of my friends who care already know the final roster)

Geno (Squaresoft) - Celestial being from Star Road who takes the form of a transforming doll to battle evil. Quirky, stylish; large set of short-range and long-range moves from Super Mario RPG. The hallmark of Nintendo's and Squaresoft's pre-Playstation-era cooperation. (Mallow from SMRPG would also work well, but he isn't as stylish)

Sora (Squaresoft/Disney) - Kid who goes world-hopping when a cosmic danger tries to swallow up the multiverse. He meets up with characters from different franchises to save the day. Sounds a little like Brawl's adventure mode, doesn't it? Comes with a unique keyblade, a huge action-based moveset, and a bloodless motif that meshes well with Smash Bros.' Yes, he was on a Nintendo system--the Gameboy Advance game that takes place between Kingdom Hearts and Kingdom Hearts II.

Viewtiful Joe (Capcom) - Regular Joe gets sucked into movieland to save his girlfriend and look cool doing it. His game is even a 2-D platform fighter. Moveset? Easy. Final Smash? "Slow FX"

Krystal (Nintendo/Rare?) - A female StarFox character with a staff. A lot of people were really surprised when another Fox clone was added to the game instead of her. She definitely could have been more unique than Fox and Falco's new buddy. (At least now Smash Bros. has a true Ken-Ryu-Akuma trio)

Kamek (Nintendo) - The Magikoopa who couldn't; after stealing the show in Yoshi's Island, he almost made it into Mario Kart 64--but Wario stole his spot. Since then, he's fallen out of favor with the Nintendo overlords, but with a rod, broom, teleportation, and attack magic, he would make a decent lightweight fighter. (That said, I freely admit I have a big soft spot for Kamek)
