I've been thinking a little about Bards lately. Particularly, Bards in games.
A Bard is an entertainer, an actor (see Shakespear, The Bard). In Fantasy, a Bard is an adventurer who succeeds by singing, playing an intrument, or dancing, usually causing magical effects. In many games, Bards are a throwaway class. They tend to have weak magic, and if they have an ability nobody else has it doesn't make up for the fact that they do pitiful damage and have trouble protecting themselves. It's sad, because I think Bards are cool.
But what made me start thinking about Bards was when I finally got my own copy of Elite Beat Agent. There aren't many games about Bards. (There is the Bard's Tale series, which may escape the above rant because he's the main character--I haven't played any of them) The Elite Beat Agents, though, are the epitome of the Bard Class. They sing, they dance, and if they do it well enough, they magically inspire people to great feats of courage and luck. It's pretty cool.
Regarding Elite Beat Agents, we have decided we prefer playing the single player mode at the same time and comparing scores at the end to competing in the multiplayer versus mode. I have just the 'final boss' song left to complete in Hard Rock mode, besides maxing out my scores in every stage and every difficulty level.
In other news, I care about Smash Bros. Brawl way more than anybody else. It's been delayed to February 10th, but it's also been displayed to journalists, meaning there is slightly more information out there right now than what is meted out via the Dojo.
On the other hand, that probably means the next two weeks of Dojo updates will probably be rehashes of things we've already deduced (or will deduce as people write detailed impressions). The remaining Final Smashes of the characters in the demo, additional assist trophies, etc. On the other hand, the new stage announced on Monday is apparently a Mother 3 spoiler. This is what happens when you refuse to release popular (though indie) games in the US, Nintendo of America.
This weekend was family-filled. On Saturday, Stephie and I went over to Mom and Dad's to visit with them and the grandparents (Grandma and Grandpa came up for the weekend to ride bikes, and Grandma ended up breaking her arm! :( ). On Sunday, Mom and Dad came over to watch the food network with us--and to eat Stephanie's delicious lasagna.
As for work, this week I start my first official on-call schedule. It makes me feel like a real IT geek!
