Emma from 'Glee': The most fashionable character on TV right now?

As promised last week, I wanted to share with you guys some more of my interview with Glee’s costume designer, Lou Eyrich.
In this installment, Eyrich talked to me about sweet, cheery teacher, Emma. From her colorful cardigans to her adorable owl sweater chains, she has a bright, retro style that has made waves with fans just as much as the fantastic musical numbers.
Although most of Emma’s cute pieces are no longer available for purchase, check out what Eyrich has to say about the character’s drool-worthy style.
What was your inspiration for Emma’s style?
Oddly enough, Jayma is my inspiration because she’s got that perfect little body to dress, the big eyes, the red hair. And the way she plays her character - she’s just so innocent and sweet. But she’s really also quirky, like with her obsession with germs.
What was your approach to styling her?
We wanted to make her look like everything’s so neat - perfectly ironed and tucked-in shirts with matching belts, shoes and pins. We wanted to make her stand out from the other teachers. She’s always so happy and excited, so we wanted her outfits to represent that sunny disposition. In the pilot, we made her look much more teacher-y. Now we’re having more fun with her character, keeping her bright and unusual. Quriky is the word. Emma’s also always in stacked Mary Janes or T-strap heels. It takes the outfit down from being too stylish or too sexy. It makes her look prim and almost old-fashioned.
Are there certain colors you use on Jayma?
In the pilot, we tried to do some browns and greys, but we felt it didn’t work. It’s not any specific color, but we use pops of color to grab your attention and put some fun pins or necklaces on her.
Where do you shop for her?
Mostly J. Crew and Anthropologie. We also shop at Saks, especially the brand Milly. They do that great little tribute to the ’60s. We started collecting the sweater chains all over town, especially antique stores and vintage clothing stores for the pins. I’m obsessed with sweater pins!
