When they were out of ear and eye shot of everyone else, Kaylee snuggled her face into Jayne’s neck. “Im sorry Jayne. I didna mean for you to find out this way. Was gonna tell you. I just didn’t know how.”
Jayne tried not to be upset at Kaylee. A lot had happened to her in the last hour or so, and she was rightfully shaken up. But how could she not tell him she was pregnant. “How’s about, ‘Jayne, I’m pregnant.’ That’s assumin it is mine,” he snipped as he stopped at her hatch. He kicked open the door, and set her down. “Is it mine?” he asked not looking at her.
Tears not far from the surface, they reappeared in Kaylee’s eyes again. “That’s just plain mean Jayne. Of course it’s yours. I ain’t been with anyone else since Simon.” At the mention of Simon, her eyes over flowed again.
Jayne gently guided her to the ladder and watched her make her way down. When she cleared the bottom, Jayne followed behind her. After closing and locking the door, Jayne turned to find Kaylee curled into a ball on her bed. Wetting a washcloth in her sink, he moved to sit beside her on the bed. Gently he took one hand and wiped it clean of soot and dirt. He then worked on the side of her face he could reach. He didn’t know what else to do for Kaylee. He wasn’t sure what the tears were for. For Simon? For him? For herself? For the baby? For all of it? And he didn’t know how to get her to talk to him about whatever it was that was bothering her. So he just sat and watched waiting for a clue from her.
The clue never came. She cried herself to sleep. Jayne pulled her blanket up and over her form. Kissing her temple, he left, leaving her to get the rest she needed.
This is it for now. Am working on the next part. I'll post it when its done.
