Thanks for daring me to write my own Jaylee story, Squish_67 and Bookaddict43!

Be gentle! It’s my first fanfic story.

It’s told from both sides of the relationship. Each part is from Jayne or Kaylee’s point of view, or both! Other characters pop in and out. Some chapters will be from their point of view.

The plot bunny came from the Philosophy_20 prompt tablet #7 both sides.

Enjoy! (I hope….)

Part 4

Jayne put the things he’d gathered on the table in the kitchen.

Picking up the towel and the blanket his Ma made he went over to Kaylee, who was still by the sink. Reaching across he turned off the tap, surrounding her burnt hand in the soft, warm towel. He put his Ma’s blanket over her shoulders to keep her warm.

“Come and sit down and I’ll see ta dressin’ that wound.”

With his hand in the small of her back, he led her to the table, pulling out a chair for her and sitting her down. Then he grabbed a chair himself and prepared to dress her hand.

Her hand was resting on the table, and he opened up the towel to look at the burn. As he leaned over to check the wound, he lightly blew on it. She sharply drew her breath in.

“I’ll give you this smoother to quiet the pain some.” He said as he injected the pain-killer into her neck.

He opened the tube of burn cream and applied it more gently than she ever imagined he could. Then, as he laid a weave on top she gasped in pain. Slowly and carefully, Jayne wrapped a bandage around her hand, finally covering it with the towel again.

“How does it feel now?” he asked, his blue eyes showing all the concern he felt.

Kaylee gasped and smiled through the pain. “It’s startin’ ta ease.”

“Here, let me help you over to the couch….Ya can lie down and rest….I’ll get ya somethin’ ta eat and drink.”

He helped her up by her good arm, led her to the couch, took off the blanket, helped her sit then lay down and tucked the blanket around her.

“Thank you, Jayne.”

“You’re welcome! You’ve done this for me more times than I can count! I’m just repayin’ the favour.”

“Is that the only reason?” she asked, tentatively.

“Well…..” he slowly smiled, “You’re ma crew mate, a gorram useful one, and you’re ma friend, ma best friend here on Serenity. Ya stuck up for me plenty of times the Cap’n wanted to throw me out the airlock, and ya the shiniest, happiest thing on this here boat.  I reckon that’s plenty o’ reason to take care o’ ya every once in a while….” He kept his eyes down, not wanting to raise them until he knew how Kaylee was responding.

When she was strangely silent, he looked up and saw her fast asleep. He knelt down by her sleeping form and gently stroked her hair.

“Hush now, Bao Bei!” He gently kissed her on the forehead, “Ya get some sleep now. Rest up and get better. ‘Cause we need ya here on Serenity, healthy and well, lookin’ after ya girl, keeping her runnin’ smooth. We need ya Kaylee ‘cause ya light up the whole gorram boat with that beautiful smile of your’n.”

Only River, hiding in the shadows, heard his voice break as he stroked her cheek.

“Kaylee girl, rest up and get better ‘cause I need ya. I’ve loved ya since I first came to Serenity. Ya gorram near broke me with all ya moonin’ about over that prissy doc. But now ya looking at me again with that shiny smile o’ your’n, I feel like I got a chance again. And I wrote my Ma about ya. She asks in every letter after ya. Make me real proud if ya’d write a few lines to my Ma. Awww, gorram it!! I know I’m gonna have ta say this all again ta ya when you’re feelin’ better….. “

He kissed her cheek, then sat down next to the couch and kissed her lips, so gently.
