I remember pondering about the use of "You're welcome" when I was in my teens. I felt that such a response wasn't very polite and in some way showed a disparity in the power dynamic. Hard to pin down what exactly made me feel that way.

In Chinese (Mandarin) the response to "Thank you" is a statement that means "Don't be (so) polite" which seemed to more self-effacing than "You're welcome." This may have influenced the way I felt about "You're welcome."

Nowadays, I see "You're welcome" as just an understood shorthand way of acknowledging the thanks that one is given.

Sometimes I will say, "No worries" in response to "Thank you" but that seems like it has potential pitfalls.
