The Painting (Naruto)

The Painting
"What are you painting?"
I started, before rushing to hide my half-finished picture. I pulled out a different painting I'd started months ago, but never finished. Anything to keep her from seeing that picture.
"Good morning, Hag."
"I asked you a question, Sai. What are you painting?"
"I can't see how that is any of your business, Hag."
Sakura glowered, "If you call me that one more time, I'm going to send you flying. Is that clear?"
"Yes, Ugly," I said with my fake smile carefully in place.
"Sai!" a vein popped in her forehead, while she cracked her knuckles.
"Yes Ugly?"
She didn't reply because she was too busy teaching him how to fly.
"Now, Sai, what were you painting?"
"Nothing!"
She frowned for a second, and then suddenly smiled. She moved closer. "Oh, Sai", she sang. She lunged forward and grabbed all the paintings before I could react. When I tried to grab them back, the one I'd been so desperately hiding fluttered to the ground and her eyes lit on it. I froze. Her mouth opened to form a small o, before she reached down to pick it up.
"Sai," she began softly. "It's beautiful."
"I had a good subject" I mumbled, refusing to meet her eyes.
For a moment she simply stared at me. Then she leaned closer and gently kissed my cheek, as my eyes widened in shock.
"When this is finished, may I have it?" she asked quietly.
"Yes" I answered, just as softly.
"Thank you." She handed the picture back and slowly walked away.
I looked down at the half-finished painting of the one I loved, and for the first time, a real smile graced my features.
