Capitalism has become the dominant economic system in the world as it is the system that is most compatible with man's most basic and primary ethos: want. Man will consistently display a clear and precise desire to accumulate. Man will always take steps to pursue his or her own comfort and convenience.

This paradigm surely exists at the individual level, but we can also observe it combining and growing into something more powerful, just as cells combine to form complex systems. Under capitalism, groups of humans with a common aim are known as corporations, and the individual wants team up to form a corporate want, one that is often greater than the sum of its parts. Corporations are always interested in ways of growing their business. Revenues are to be increased, and expenses are to be cut. The corporation will always act towards these motives. We never hear about a corporation whose goal is to maintain the status quo.

Interestingly, this notion is not limited to the corporation. It can be observed among nations. Nations, though organized very differently from corporations, have similar goals. Nations want there populations to increase, for their wealth and standard of living to increase, and for the value of their currency to increase.

For those of us who are employed by corporations, it is important to keep this idea in mind. One can easily be tricked into believing that they owe something to their employer, or that their employer owes something to them. This is a fallacy. Employees exchange their time and energy for wages, and that is where the transaction ends. It is that simple. As soon as one's value to the corporation is outweighed by one's cost, that individual is quickly dispatched. These decisions are referred to as "business decisions", reminding us that the relationship between employee and employer is all part of a business - an entity that seeks above all else to further its own wealth.

Capitalism is clearly best equipped to provide man the vehicle to further his own wealth. We have seen consistent failure of more socialist economic systems around the world, simply because these systems are not accommodating to man's seemingly insatiable want.

Economic systems are fundamentally mechanisms by which the planet's resources are put to use to satisfy the wants of human beings. Having established that the wants of human beings are limitless, then it stands to reason that the only logical conclusion to our existence is to deplete the planet's resources completely until it can no longer sustain us at all.
