Wheee, I'm skiing.
Well, not right now, obviously.
I was going to post some alpine pictures on here... but... this computer has no USB port... which scuppers that plan.
(for the future I shall... install Photoshop on Tom's laptop, thus introducing him to its wonder, and bring out blank CDRWs to ferry my pictures into town on)
Skiing is great so far. Mum and Dad picked a really nice *imagine some pictures posted here*.
The views up the mountain are spectacular *imagine more pictures here*
And I bought a rather fetching new hat *imagine geeky picture here*
I know, I know, I never look good in hats... *sigh* ...but it is a very nice hat.
So, all is good.
I was going to take the first day really easily... but then...
The first day was uberfoggy, and I got a tad lost... and instead of skiing a nice gentle run, ended up on a black run.
At the bottom of that I met a very bubbly frenchman. We got to chatting and he asked if I wanted to share his mate's mulled wine and then ski with them. When we got to the top they'd run out of vin chaud, but I skiied with them.
It was fun, they were nutters.
We also had a bit of a language exchange.
They learnt: "it's a real pea souper"
"poncing a fag" and "scrounging a fag"
and "total wipe-out"
I learnt: the difference between Copin and Copine (oops... boyfriend and girlfriend).
a word that I'm going ot spell wrong... Chouchette. apparently it's french for a girl who is scared of breaking a nail (???) Andy, is that right?
and that the French bemoan their language teachers as much as we do ours. Good to know.
They liked me because I described myself as a Ros-Bif, agreed that French cooking is better than the stuff we make, and made an effort with my poor french.
I liked them because they were nice, made an effort with their good english, and it's nice to ski with someone and my family had all given up for the day already.
They did it today as well... but I had loads of fun exploring the resort and skiied the run that's being prepped for the men's downhill event next week a few times. Admittedly I didn't do it as well as the lycra-clad pros will. But on the plus side... I've never worn lycra in my life.
I also got some thinking done for things I want to write, and might see about stealing Tom's laptop for a bit when I get back to Les Houches. Skiing always helps with my writing, it really clears my head and gives me a chance to have a good think.
After the day's skiing, in true geek style I took a half hour bus ride into town to update my journal and send some Emails.
Anyway, I'm cooking tonight, so I had better not dally here too long.
(oh, but I just noticed, the man next to me is wearing a rather fetching cravatte. nice)
