pre-Oscar thoughts

I almost attained my goal of seeing all the best picture noms this year. I was short only one -- The Reader. I guess I'll catch it another time.

Benjamin Button: Crap. Total crap. Hope it loses.

Frost/Nixon: Very good. Not entirely accurate, but who cares? Exemplary performance from Frank Langella. If there's any justice this year, he'll take home best actor. He won't, but wow anyway.

Milk: Not as good as it was written. I fault Sean Penn, who just can't do warm characters. He's a great actor, but there's a reason why his career is mostly gloomy or angry or 'off' people. He comes across as cold on-screen. Harvey Milk, at least in this treatment, was not cold. He was a big, lovable teddy bear lug of a guy. Sean Penn is not, nor can he muster it up to put on screen.

Slumdog Millionaire: The winner and still champion. Really, really, really great movie. Should walk away with best pic, best director, and best score, at least. And will probably pick up a few more beyond that.
