Memories of A Pawn

“You have a lot to learn,Toshiro” she said quietly as I tried to figure out a way to work myself out of this mess.  I moved my rook away from the trapped piece, intending to make it look like I had given up on it.  My plan went well until I got close to the piece.  With a single move she captured both pieces.  “You cannot save everyone, my dear.” The game went on until her bishop was getting close to my king and I sent out my queen.  I was surprised when, instead of drawing back she let her bishop get taken.

“But that piece was useful.” I said, “It could have won you the game, why did you give it up?”'

“Sometimes you have to make a sacrifice for the greater good,” she said. The game went on and sure enough, my aunt won. Back then I didn’t understand the chilling significance of her words. I had no way of knowing that when she looked down at her pieces she saw us, her family.
