£490 eek! That includes fitting, brass bars and underlay so I suppose it's ok but we picked one of the cheaper carpets. The colour I chose didn't really go but for some reason he happened to have another random sample with him that seemed to go better with our walls and tiles. It was called Harvest and was a pale gold - looked quite posh actually so maybe. He wanted money off me then and there. No way. I said I'd call into the shop because I hadn't reached a final decision on colour, which is true. It's a lot of money to make a mistake with.
He was really young, maybe 20, 23 max. It always surprises me how self-assured younger people seem nowadays compared to me and my peers when we were that age. It's not like I'm ancient but I think the whole education system changed after I left school. I sometimes do voluntary work in my local primary school and I was so surprised how different it is. The teachers treat the children with respect and listen to them and the lessons are so different - like enjoyable and not boring! There is a lot of discussion and class participation. They were learning about Van Gogh's Sunflowers in one art lesson. When I was in primary school, it was "copy this from the blackboard" or "read your text book and answer the questions at the end of the chapter" and was pretty much sit down, shut up and get on with your work. Bear in mind a lot of my teachers were horrible nuns too. They used to shout at me (and I mean shout) for finishing my work too quickly and make me do it again. Hence my school life long habit of playing dumb. It was only when I got into higher education that I met people who thought it was ok to be bright and interested in academic work. I had a bad time in school but I'm making up for it now :)
