Like whoa, I've been MIA for eons here!! It's been a weird and busy year (although not a bad one), and as a result I found my fannish energy level very low for a while. Too many other mental distractions, I think! But I think my appetite for fandom is returning, so I hope to be here more often. (Or on DW? Is everyone moving there ( Read more... )

Well, I wouldn't call it scary per se, but I've found that because Doctor Who has such a large fandom it's rather segregated--I tend to mostly hang out among the River Song fen, which is a kind of sub-fandom with its own comms, popular fic writers, etc. The sub-fandom within a huge fandom is a new experience for me, having mostly been involved with small to medium size fandoms where everyone has to rub elbows at some point.

If you want to check out River Song specifically, try "Silence in the Library" (season 4), "The Time of Angels" (season 5), and "The Pandorica Opens" (season 5). But I do recommend the show starting from season 5--it's a lot of fun.

Yeah, Game of Thrones could share some of the fix-it qualities that made LFN so irresistible to write. But I do feel Game of Thrones has more serious problems than the continuity issues in LFN--I tended to feel fairly benevolent towards the latter when they screwed things up, but I've felt actively pissed off with GoT because of the aforementioned misogyny. It's not good if you get really angry at the show, right? But it's definitely intriguing. If you have HBO I think they have the whole series to watch online.

Hmmmm, I guess there is a difference between getting angry at lapses ion the show (LFN) versus getting angry at the entire show itself (my experience by the end of BSG!). I'm not sure where Game of Thrones might fall in that spectrum. But it's worth checking out, as are the DW eps you mentioned!
