I'm a bit late, but I finally watched the Spooks S8 finale. A very mixed bag, in my opinion.
Things I liked:
1. I had wanted a Ros vs. Sarah brawl ever since Sarah was revealed as a baddie. (Er, maybe even before that!) TPTB gave me one! And then let Ros shoot Sarah! I am very pleased with this.
2. Tariq getting a bit of character development. I like him more and more every ep.
3. Ruth being sensible and perceptive.
4. New Home Secretary! And especially New Home Secretary/Ros. They had some real chemistry, unlike some other pairings that shall go unmentioned. He was charming and funny -- and then he and Ros broke my heart. Their desperation and somewhat hysterical laughter as the end came near...just...GAH.
5. Ros' ending. I may not want her dead, but if she had to go? I approve. She could have saved herself -- and probably should have, since saving the Home Secretary was clearly hopeless -- but she preferred to do what she considered the honorable thing. Very Ros. And boy, did HN act the hell out of those scenes!
Things I disliked:
1. Plotholes...I should be used to them now, but sometimes they just grate, and this was one of those times. The villains were tired and unoriginal as well. And how on earth was there enough time for Lucas to carry out the President of Pakistan, talk to Harry, etc. etc., and then still have time to think that maybe he should go back to help Ros, all in the space of 2 minutes or however much time there was left on that timer? I buy that maybe he could have made it out of the building, but nothing else.
2. Pacing. Too rushed, all the way through. Their better episodes are ones that build up the tension, but this just veered hurriedly from one thing to another.
3. Lucas. Why did his IQ drop in half every time he was within 50 yards of Sarah? And is he going to become all angsty like Adam from now on? Please, God, I hope not. The whole reason I liked Lucas was because he *wasn't* wallowing in angst, despite having rather good reasons to.
4. Sarah's death. Very anti-climactic, somehow. She deserved a better exit. (I was also secretly hoping that she would be revealed as merely pretending to be an American, thus turning the accent into a genuine plot point, but I suppose that was too much to ask!)
Things I have mixed feelings about:
1. Continuing to watch the show! I like all the characters who are left, but I'm not sure that they are enough to hold my loyalty as a viewer. Losing Ros, Malcolm and Jo in a single season is a hard blow to recover from.
