Indeed.

While the government did succeed in closing down most of the pirates in 1967, they had a major impact on the British pop music industry. Many pop acts had success they never would have had without the airtime the pirates gave them.

And the pirate stations also changed British radio for ever.

The lesson being - you might shut down individual sites, but you can't reverse the effect they've had, so you have to find a way to work with it, not against it.

(On a side note, I'm greatly amused by the prominence the BBC has given to the Pirate Bay logo in its online coverage of the story. Makes you wonder whose side they're on.)
