Americans are also least willing to let their children marry atheists.

As opposed to letting their children marry homosexuals? Kind of odd preference.

What are your thoughts on this anyway?

Thoughts on the news article.

If we look at it logically, why must it necessarily be atheists? Would they not run this "shocking" expose if it turned out to be homosexuals that were mistrusted? Muslims? Immigrants? Blacks? With the exception of a sinless world, some group must be least trusted. The article just seems to be sensationalism if you ask me.

Also: "I know atheists aren't studied that much as a sociological group, but I guess atheists are one of the last groups remaining that it's still socially acceptable to hate," strikes me as a load of crap. Especially in the rise of Dawkins-style atheism.

Oh, I definitely think the article is sensationalization. However, I also think the reasons people distrust atheists are stupid. The atheists I know are actually pretty nice people.

I'm afraid that I don't actually understand why this is sensationalism. I'm sure that they would have reported the result no matter what group it turned out to be. It is "shocking", however, because nobody really talks about how they feel towards Atheists in general society. Plus, like the article says, there are hardly any studies done about this particular group of people. The other groups one would have guessed way before Atheists, particularly homosexuals seeing as they are talked about so often in politics and in general. My sisters friend didn't even know what an Atheist was and was confused by the idea that someone might not believe in a God. It is just a given. In this country there are still many people that consider the idea that there might not be a God as a foreign, strange and therefore scary concept.
