Overload, part 6: Uni, exciting news, etc.

OK, so im on the last leg of this epic marathon that is my last few months.

so as you can see, i've been a busy little boy, with AUJS, but i haven't totally neglected my studies. in the last few months, i've had prac reports for Physiology, Biochemistry and Cellular Biology coming out of my ears. and every second Wednesday, i have to wake up at the ungodly hour of 6am to at uni for my 8am Physiology pracs. ouch. the rest of my pracs aren't much better, both being fortnightly at 9am on Mondays and Fridays. luckily, i never have all three in one week, otherwise i'd die! i've also had mid-semester test for all three units, in which i got 85% for Physiology, 57% for Biochemistry and 54% for Cellular Biology. i know the last two results aren't that great, but i'm just happy that i passed them, cos they are both much harder than Physiology.

in mid-March, i sat a test called the GAMSAT, which stands for the Graduate Australian Medical Schools Admissions Test. it is a test for students who wish to get into a graduate medicine course. there are only 7 universities in Australia that have a graduate medical course, Melbourne Uni being the only one in Victoria. i got my results this week, and i didn't do that greatly, but it wasnt too bad either. the next step is to put the universities in order of preference and to apply for an interview. to be accepted into one of the medical schools, i have to pass the interview. they also look at my grades. i'm not too worried if i don't get in this year beacuse i can sit the test again next year. my cousin Daniel, who's studying biomed at Monash, did the test last year but didn't get in. he did it again this year and did much better and will for sure get an interview. im still hopeful though.

Apart from my involvement in AUJS, i'm also involved in an Israel advocay group called AdvoCafe which is run by Hagshama, which i mentioned earlier. the aim of the group is to "arm" young adults like myself with the knowledge and resources needed to combat anti-Israel and anti-Semitic bias in public, in the media and now on the internet. we have meetings every few weeks and often have guest speakers. the last person we had was a Melbourne-born guy who moved to Israel with his family about 12 years ago. in 2002, his 16 year old daughter was killed in a terrorist attack in Jerusalem.

OK, now for what you've all been waiting for: the exciting news.

well, firstly, i got a new job. it's at Safeway in Malvern Central shopping centre, a huge supermarket chain owned by the second largest retail company in the country. i applied online a couple of months ago and i got a phone call within a few weeks. i had my induction last Saturday and it was soooo boring. i sat there for about 6 hours watching a DVD with all the information i need to know, and then answering questions in a book. i had my training on Tuesday and Wednesday, which was a bit better. we were basically shown how to use the registers and how to serve customers, and all that jazz. anyway, i called up my store this morning, and my first shift is on Saturday morning. i'm so excited. i haven't worked since i left Red Rooster in February, and i was in desperate need of money cos i hate asking my parents for money.

which leads me to my next piece of exciting news. some of you reading this may already know, but my brother, who lives in New York, finally got engaged and has announced his wedding date for June 30th. Which means i'm going to New York, the Big Apple! my dad booked my ticket today for June 23rd, and i'm coming back on July 19th. i'm going to be there for the 4th of July, which is gonna go off! can't wait to see Times Square, Statue of Liberty, Madison Square Gardens, Yankee Stadium, Central Park. I'm also going to Washington DC for a couple of days. im so excited, i can't wait!!!

so yeah, that has been my last few months. don't forget to comment, peoples...pleeeeeeeeeeeeeease!

peace out.

Jacob.
